UK Defense Secretary Steps Down Amid Dispute Over Military Funding Plans

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom’s defense secretary, John Healey, has resigned from his position, stating that he could no longer remain in office following disagreements over proposed defense investment levels, according to reports.

In a resignation letter addressed to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Healey said he had not anticipated leaving his role in this manner, but argued that the government’s planned spending framework did not adequately address the needs of the armed forces in light of increasing security challenges.

He emphasized that a long-anticipated defense investment strategy fell short of what he considered necessary funding to strengthen military readiness. Healey also pointed to earlier cross-government assessments, completed in January, which he said had highlighted the scale of the defense requirements and the growing pressures on the system.

According to his account, the required additional funding had not been fully committed, with financial support structured in a way he described as delayed, despite urgent operational demands in the early years. He also referenced projections suggesting that defense spending would gradually rise toward approximately 2.68% of GDP by 2030, while noting that current efforts were expected to reach around 2.6% in the near term.

The resignation comes against a backdrop of broader concerns about Britain’s military preparedness. A report from the House of Commons Defense Select Committee previously warned that the country lacks a comprehensive homeland defense strategy and is not sufficiently prepared for emerging global threats.

While the UK remains one of Europe’s most capable military powers, the same assessment noted that its long-term ability to maintain this position is increasingly under strain.
