UK Defense Secretary Warns Military Bases Face Security Threats
Authorities declared a major incident Sunday in Whelford, a village close to the airbase, after police detained five men as part of an investigation into suspected offenses under the Explosives Act.
Gloucestershire Police said 85 households were evacuated from the area while emergency teams assessed the situation. Residents were temporarily moved to a local leisure center as the investigation continued.
RAF Fairford is a Royal Air Force facility that also supports operations by the US Air Force.
Counter Terrorism Policing said the five men were arrested on suspicion of preparing to carry out a terrorist act.
During an interview, Streeting was asked whether the military facility had previously been the subject of another security alert.
He declined to provide details, saying: "We know that there are people, state-backed actors, terrorists, who would do this country harm, and we know that because they tell us and they're not shy about that."
